Meet sign maker, Casey
Can you describe your role and responsibilities?
As a sign maker, my responsibilities span from design and material selection, to sign fabrication. I work closely with clients to select the most suitable fonts, colours and sizes to meet their requirements, and use a range of software including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and CoreIDRAW to create mock-ups and proofs.
Aside from the overall aesthetic, I consider factors like durability and weather resistance depending on the specific requirements. I also assemble the signs and carry out inspections to check the sign for any flaws or errors, ensuring it meets both the client’s specifications and quality standards.
What brought you to where you are today?
I studied graphic and product design for three years and gained my BA degree in 2019. Following graduation, I began working in the signage industry in Sligo. It was there that I discovered my passion for sign making and graphic installation.
What’s your favourite thing about working for Advanced Safety/Message Works?
I love the people. We have a small but incredible team that collaborates seamlessly, bringing out the best ideas together. This approach makes every project both enjoyable and successful.
Are there any specific issues you currently see the industry facing?
There’s a significant evolution from regulatory compliance, to environmental impact and sustainability, and client needs and expectations (including the desire for enhanced customisation). For this reason, sign makers must be ready to adapt, embrace new technologies and trends, and be innovative.
Tell us something people might be surprised to learn about you?
I’m passionate about applying graphics and vinyl to cars and vans. On weekends, I love spending time transforming ordinary vehicles into vibrant works of art. It’s incredibly satisfying to take something plain and give it a whole new life with bold, colourful designs. It’s a creative outlet that I truly enjoy, and I hope to one day set up my own workshop where I can dedicate more time to this craft.
Imagine you had a safety sign in your home, what would it say?
It would definitely be something like “Beware of the dogs.” I have two border collies who are super energetic and jumpy. They’re always so enthusiastic that they’ll smother you with love as soon as you walk through the door!
